The Bullard Family enjoying a game of pickleball, featured on PICKLEBALLcations, the pickleball travel agency that Christine Bullard is CEO of.

For a long time, I didn’t really get the whole pickleball thing. It just seemed like a watered-down version of tennis that was more for retirees than anyone my age. But then some friends started bugging me to come check out one of their league games, and I’ve got to say – they may have been onto something. Pickleball is actually a super fun way to get active and socialize that I think a lot more people should consider.

Once I got past my misconceptions and gave it a real shot, I was surprised by how addicting pickleball can be. The smaller court and wiffle ball make it way less intimidating than tennis if you’re not an elite athlete. It’s really easy to just jump in and start rallying within just a few minutes. And because it’s faster paced than tennis, there’s constant action that keeps games exciting. Before I knew it, an hour had flown by and I was begging my friends to stay for “just one more match.”

What I also loved was how social of an activity pickleball is. Since the courts are side by side, it’s easy to bounce between games and cheer each other on. We ended up chatting and laughing with a bunch of friendly regulars too. It felt more like a fun outdoor party than a stuffy country club sport. Who knew exercise could be this much of a good time?

The other bonus is that pickleball is such a versatile activity you can do year-round. When the weather’s nice, nothing beats playing outdoors in the sunshine. But many communities also have indoor courts so you don’t have to pack it in for winter. And no matter your skill level, there’s sure to be others at your stage to have a competitive but low-pressure match with.

So if you’ve been looking for an active hobby the whole family can enjoy together, I really think pickleball deserves a chance. It might just become your new favorite way to stay active and social. Heck, why not make it a way to travel too?
